The former dictator had 27 liters (7 gallons) of his own blood drawn out of his body to be used as ink. This project reportedly took him only 2 years to do, which, if true, could have killed him. All 114 chapters (336,000 words!) of the holy book were written in blood, and the new bloody book was placed into a secure vault in Baghdad. Now that the dictator is gone, the question of what to do with the book remains a contentious issue. Writing a Koran in blood is considered to be blasphemous, but ...Continue

Osama Bin Laden is dead, President Obama announced Sunday night, in a televised address to the nation. His death was the result of a U.S. operation launched today in Abbottabad, Pakistan, against a compound where bin Laden was believed to be hiding, according to U.S. intelligence. After a firefight, a small team of American forces killed bin Laden and took possession of his body, the president said.

“Tonight I can report to the American people and the world that the United States has conduc ...

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the arrest of defeated Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo sends a message to dictators that they cannot disregard the verdict of free elections. The United States had strongly backed the internationally-recognized winner of last year’s election, Alassane Ouattara.

The United States had supported the African Union and United Nations effort to dislodge Gbagbo with financial and travel sanctions. And welcoming his surrender, Clinton said the e ...

The Russian capital Moscow now boasts more billionaires than any other city in the world, according to a survey by Forbes magazine.
The study also estimates that a quarter of Russia's wealth is now concentrated in the hands of just 100 people.

Topping the list with an estimated fortune of $15.2bn is Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the former head of the oil firm Yukos, who is presently in jail facing charges of fraud and tax evasion.

The 37-year-old oil and aluminium tycoon, Roman Abramovich, who l ...

Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have moved into rebel territory in the east and are battling for an oil installation in the town of Brega.

Its manager said government forces took control at dawn without force but the rebels said they had regained the town.

Pro-Gaddafi jets also bombed an arms dump in the nearby city of Ajdabiya.

Col Gaddafi said on TV he would "fight until the last man and woman" and warned that thousands of Libyans would die if Western forces intervened.

This is according to estimates that by 2050, the Earth’s population will jump to 9 billion. This is also based on the (somewhat dubious) assumption that in that same period of time, incomes will rise, tripling on average, with incomes quadrupling in the developing world. Assuming population growth, higher incomes, and the fact that higher incomes lead to an increase in food consumption leads to the conclusion that the demand for food will rise astronomically.

Of course, since every pound o ...

Tunisians filled the streets with the help of Twitter. Egypt's protests were coordinated on Facebook pages like that of internet activist Wael Ghonim. Libyan dissenters spread the word about their "day of rage" last week the same way.
And yet, in these heady days where the entire Middle East seems to be inspired to organize online in revolt against autocracy, it has become fashionable for experts to dismiss the role of social media in 2011's revolutions.
"People protested and brought down gove ...

When it finally came, the end was swift. After 18 days of mass protest, it took just over 30 seconds for Egypt's vice-president, Omar Suleiman, to announce that President Hosni Mubarak was standing down and handing power to the military.

"In the name of Allah the most gracious the most merciful," Suleiman read. "My fellow citizens, in the difficult circumstances our country is experiencing, President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak has decided to give up the office of the president of the republic and ...

The word literally refers to people from the Caucasus Mountain region of the Middle East, but has grown to encompass most peoples of European ancestry. Caucasian is now frequently as the politically correct substitute for ‘white’ in the same way that ‘African-American’ serves as an alternative to ‘black.’

However, this terminology has some unfortunate origins and implications. It comes from the idea that the inhabitants of the Caucasus displayed the ideal human features. Therefor ...

Gaga has reportedly signed a contract for her own scent with the world’s largest fragrance company, Coty, Inc. According to “unnamed sources within the fragrance industry” and fashionista.com, she has requested that the perfume mimic the smell of blood and semen! We can’t say we’re surprised, but we’ll have to wait and see if this rumor proves to be true.

i had already closed that chapter of my life.
five years ago, i made that decision.
my heart would be sealed forever.
that promise i made on my own,
and meant to keep for as long as i lived.

just when i thought i had everything under control,
you came again through the door,
and you caught me off guard like never before,
walking over my defenses with ease,
as if they were nothing more than a bed of roses.

for a moment or two,
everything seemed to stand still,
as you came strai ...

At the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco, Google CEO Eric Schmidt declared: "It's a bug that cars were invented before computers. Your car should drive itself. It just makes sense."

The Internet giant revealed Saturday in a blog post that it has been hard at work on that bug: It's road-testing cars that are driven by artificial intelligence software, not humans.

The cars have traveled 140,000 miles on major California roads (where they have occasionally been spotted), navigati ...

Taliban insurgents have attacked two coalition bases in eastern Afghanistan, Nato forces say.

Coalition forces repelled both attacks, killing 18 militants and capturing others, the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said.
